Island lore from Orkney and Shetland in Scotland tells of the tangie (or tongie), a sea spirit that changes shape; as a sea horse or merman it appears as either a horse or an old man. It is usually said to be draped in seaweed, and its name comes from 'tang', seaweed of the genus Fucus. It is known for frightening lone travellers, above all young women on roads near the lochs at night, whom it carries off and devours underwater. Similar to yet distinct from the smaller, milder nuggle, the tangie can drive people and animals mad. It plays a big part in Shetland's tale of Black Eric the sheep thief, whose tangie steed gave him supernatural help as he raided nearby crofts. In his last fight with the crofter Sandy Breamer, Black Eric fell into the sea and died, but the tangie went on terrorising the area. According to the ru article the Танги is likewise a sea shapeshifter able to drive a person or animal mad.
