Qʼuqʼumatz was the wind and rain god of the Postclassic Kʼicheʼ Maya. According to the Popol Vuh, this Feathered Serpent created the world and humanity with the god Tepeu. It carried the sun across the sky into the underworld and mediated between the powers of the Maya cosmos. Its name literally means "quetzal serpent". It is considered the equivalent of the Aztec Quetzalcoatl and the Yucatec Kukulkan, and may once have been the same as Tohil, the Kʼicheʼ sun god. With Tepeu it was regarded as ancestor of the Kʼicheʼ nobility, and King Kotujaʼ, founder of Qʼumarkaj, bore its name as a title.
