The hippocamp is a mythical creature combining a horse’s upper body and a fish’s lower body. Fourth-century BCE Tyrian coins depict Melqart riding a winged hippocamp. A gold hippocamp from a Lydian hoard is dated to the sixth century BCE. Hippokampoi are described as fish-tailed horses of the sea. Their form combines a horse’s head and foreparts with a serpentine fish tail. Mosaic art can give hippocamps green scales and fin-like manes and appendages. The cited sources present the hippocamp as a mount for Nereid nymphs and sea-gods and as the team drawing Poseidon's chariot over the sea's surface. In the Achilleid the team runs at furious speed amid foam and swims, blotting out its footprints with its tails; Philostratus calls them good swimmers, like dolphins. The ancients also believed the hippocamp was the adult form of the sea-horse fish, and one scholar reads the Etruscan examples as evidence of an Etruscan belief in a voyage by sea to the other world.
