Bixi is a figure from Chinese mythology, depicted as a dragon with a turtle's shell and described as one of the nine sons of the Dragon King. Chinese dictionaries translate the word bixi (贔屭) as "strong" or "capable to support great weight". According to an interpretation in the reference article, Zuo Si associates the attribute bixi with the giant turtle ao. Stone sculptures of Bixi have served for centuries as plinths for commemorative steles and tablets. The tortoise-mounted stele tradition existed by the early third century, and a funerary jar dated 272 in the Nanjing Museum depicts a tortoise carrying a stele. In 1368 the Hongwu Emperor adopted regulations restricting tortoise-based funerary tablets by rank among the nobility and officials. Bixi sculptures are traditionally rubbed for good luck. Texts from the Ming era and after are not uniform about the name. One list of the dragon's sons calls the stele-bearing tortoise Xibi, whereas another names that tortoise Baxia and places Xixi at the sides of the stele. The author of one text concluded that the account of the nine sons is unfounded.
