The Basilisco chilote is a creature of Chilota mythology from southern Chile, half rooster and half serpent, said to hide beneath a house and drain its inhabitants until they die.
The Basilisco chilote comes from the mythology of Chiloé in southern Chile. Besides basilisco, it is also called fasilisco, culebrón or athrathrao, and is described as half rooster and half snake. It has a red-crested head and a long neck like a snake's body, while its body is like a rooster's but with small wings and legs, so it can only crawl along the ground. According to legend, the creature is born in a henhouse from a small, round, thick-shelled, grayish-white egg called the huevo lloilloy or huevo lloe, believed to be incubated by a rooster. By day it hides beneath the house of the henhouse's owner, and at night it comes out while everyone sleeps. It then sings a hypnotic song like a rooster's crow that keeps people asleep. The creature takes in the phlegm and saliva of the household's residents, so that they become dehydrated and in the end die. One source states that the egg must be burned as soon as it is laid and the chicken that laid it killed, and that once hatched the only way to destroy it is to burn down the house where it lives. According to another source, its origin may be a union of the Basilisk myth of Greek mythology and the Colo Colo of Mapuche mythology.
