Ahti is a water god of Finnish mythology; in the Kalevala he is called Ahto so as not to be confused with the separate character Ahti Saarelainen. One source calls him the god of the sea and fishing, depicted as a man with a beard of moss, husband of Vellamo, living with her in the undersea palace of Ahtola. The earliest written mention of Ahti comes from Mikael Agricola in 1551, who named him as the one who brings fish out of the water. Ganander called him a sea haltija (spirit) who gave fish and to whom shipwrecked fishermen cried for help. Runic songs from Kainuu address him as "Golden King of the Sea, merciful Ahti of the Sea" and ask him for perch. Healing spells invoke him under several guises, such as Ahti of the Sea, of Water, of the Forest, of the Land and of the Wind. The origin of his name is debated; one theory links it to the verb ahtaa, "to hang fishnets to dry", which would make Ahti a god who ensures luck in seine fishing.
