Ptah menjadi ayahnya, sedangkan Sekhmet atau Bastet dapat disebut ibunya. Ia sering berupa pemuda dengan bunga teratai biru di kepala. Patung kepala Tutankhamun muncul dari teratai merupakan penggambaran terkenal Nefertem. Nefertem dipanggil untuk penyembuhan melalui aroma dalam pengobatan Mesir.
