Crow Tribe folklore tells of the Little People of the Pryor Mountains, whom the Crow language calls Nirumbee or Awwakkulé, a fierce race of dwarfs. They live in the Pryor Mountains of Montana, which is why the mountains are sacred to the Crow. An academic source describes them as dwarves that are both human and supernatural and can act as spiritual guides. The first source says they are no more than 18 inches tall, very strong, with short arms and legs and little or no neck. The thesis describes them as between twenty inches and 4 feet tall, looking like miniature adults. They were known for stealing children, food, medicine and tobacco, and were believed to have made stone arrowheads. The Crow would generally avoid entering the mountains. To many the Little People are spiritual guides and helpers, to others mischievous and to be avoided, but all are taught to respect them as Elders. Offerings such as beads, cloth, tobacco, meat and piles of rocks, and shooting arrows at the cliff, were made to win safe passage. The Little People are also tied to the Sun Dance, and in a vision their chief prophesied that Plenty Coups would become a chief. In one story they adopted a Crow child lost in the mountains; according to oral history the place called Arrow Shot Into Rock is where the Crow first met them.
