The leucrota (leucrocuta) is a fabulous beast (fabeldier), the offspring of the crocotta and another animal. Like the dog-like crocotta it can imitate a human voice, but it resembles an antelope with cloven hooves and great speed. It has the thighs of a boar (zwijn), the tail, breast and neck of a lion and the head of a badger; instead of teeth it has bony ridges that grind everything. The leucrota never closes its eyes, and its spine is so stiff that it must turn round to see what is behind it. Pliny wrote of the leucrocotta, a hyena-like creature he called the fastest of all beasts: as big as an ass, with haunches like a stag, neck, tail and breast like a lion, a badger's head, split hooves, a mouth gaping back to the ears and ridges of bone where teeth should be, and reputed to mimic human voices. Later bestiaries of the Middle Ages muddled these accounts; the Aberdeen Bestiary calls the Leucrota a swift animal born in India.
