The ahuizotl is a legendary creature of Aztec mythology. It is described as the size of a small dog with waterproof fur, and its Nahuatl name roughly means "water dog". It is recorded in Book 11 of the Florentine Codex. By most accounts the ahuizotl seized people from the water's edge with the hand on its tail and ate their eyes, nails and teeth. In some versions the gods Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue sent it to collect the souls of mortals they favoured. The Aztec ruler Auítzotl took his name from the creature and made it his emblem and protective figure, and the ahuizotl was called a friend of the rain gods. Hernán Cortés even wrote to the King of Castile that an ahuizotl had killed one of his soldiers.
